Cloud Computing - Changing the Delivery of IT Services

The delivery of computing as IT services rather than products is changing the entire computer industry.  Cloud computing is a natural evolution of the widespread adoption of virtualisation, service-oriented architecture, autonomic and utility computing. Adding ‘IT Services’ into the stack makes sense to customers.

Businesses are always looking for ways to optimise financial expenditure by delivering superior performance at a reduced cost. Cloud Computing is one way to achieve this and although DNS IT is most commonly known as an IT Services and Support company, it has also been delivering Cloud Computing Services since 2002.

Cloud computing is a technology delivery model based on Internet protocols for enabling convenient, on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (such as networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

The goal is to pay for computing resources on the basis of usage whilst retaining an infrastructure flexible and agile enough to meet rapidly changing business requirements.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Cloud Infrastructure Services deliver Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) facilitates deployment of applications without the cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlying hardware and software layers. Servers, software, data centre space and network equipment is acquired as a fully outsourced service.

SOFTWARE

Cloud Application Services deliver Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) over the Internet, which eliminates the need to install and run the application on the customers’ computers, and this simplifies support and maintenance.

PLATFORM

Cloud Platform Services deliver a computing Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) which includes Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS).

The underlying concept dates back to the 1960’s and often compared with how public utility is delivered (such as electricity, water and gas), however it was not formally verbalised until 1997.  Amazon and Google were early “cloud computing” innovators and in 2007 the concept started to gather more momentum as universities and large corporations started to research how to effectively deliver Cloud Computing.

Today Cloud Computing is a mature business offering with some companies, such as DNS IT, also delivering “on demand” offerings such as professional IT services.
